Hya-bioplastics is replacing existing petroleum-derived disposable packaging with biodegradable ones using the invasive water hyacinth as a major raw material. We have created a low-cost and environmentally friendly way to convert water hyacinth in addition to other agricultural waste into various forms of packaging e.g. food and commodity packaging.
This impact has disrupted various economic activities and one of the hardest hit is agriculture. An example is the fish industry whose supply chains have been disrupted by the reduction in demand which has led to price reductions. We want to add value to the abundant agricultural waste and water hyacinth. Our startup looks to provide a much-needed source of income to these individuals and create much-needed employment opportunities.
Their Vision for the Future
We look at a future where the entire African continent will have switched from the use of petroleum-derived plastics to biodegradable plastic. We look at a future where the once invasive and destructive water hyacinth has successfully been commercialized and farmers all over Africa are earning an income that can help them afford all their basic needs.
